Esta é a minha review de The Ballad of Gay Tony, jogado no PC.

In 2009, Rockstar turned the lights on. Out went the gray, in came the party: neon, champagne, glitter and debts nobody mentions in the club line. Luis Lopez is the bouncer and right hand of Gay Tony, and Liberty City’s night never ends. This is my review of The Ballad of Gay Tony, played on PC.

HISTÓRIA
STORY
Tony Prince é o verdadeiro coração da história.
Tony Prince is the true heart of the story.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony is an explosive farewell to the Liberty City era Rockstar Games introduced in Grand Theft Auto IV. After following Niko Bellic’s journey and getting to know the brutal everyday life of the bikers in The Lost and Damned, it is time to see that same city from a completely different perspective. Here, the grime of the streets is still present, violence is still part of the routine and money problems still drive a good share of the decisions, but everything gains a layer of luxury, excess and extravagance. The nightclubs, the millionaire businessmen, the exclusive parties and the characters who seem unable to spend a few minutes without getting into some kind of mess turn this expansion into an experience with an identity of its own. Instead of trying to repeat the heavier tone of the original adventure exactly, Rockstar bets on absurd situations, more spectacular missions and an energy that fits the city’s nightlife perfectly. The result is an adventure that understands what made GTA IV so memorable, yet finds room to play with its own rules.

This time we take control of Luis Fernando Lopez, right hand, business partner and friend of Anthony Prince, known to everyone as Gay Tony. Luis does not start his journey trying to escape poverty or build a new life from scratch. He has already earned a relatively comfortable position, works in an environment full of powerful people and knows the backstage of a world where money and influence tend to open doors. The problem is that being close to Tony also means inheriting some of his questionable decisions, his complicated business and his impressive ability to turn a seemingly controlled situation into a disaster. Luis has street experience, knows how to use violence when he thinks it is necessary and rarely shows much hesitation when facing dangerous jobs. Even so, there is a loyalty in him that makes his actions understandable, even when his choices are far from right. His personality does not necessarily have the same dramatic depth as Niko Bellic’s, but it works very well within the proposal of this expansion, mainly because it lets events move forward without the protagonist having to carry the whole emotional weight of the story alone.

Although Luis is the character the player controls, Tony Prince ends up becoming one of the central figures of the experience. Owner of well-known nightlife venues and used to moving among influential people, he tries to keep up an image of success while facing financial trouble, bad business decisions and a series of problems that seem to grow with every new chapter. Tony is extravagant, insecure, dramatic and often responsible for complicating his own life. His relationship with Luis works precisely because the two are so different: while Luis tends to be more direct and practical, Tony lives surrounded by excess and does not always grasp the scale of the consequences of his actions. This dynamic produces fun moments, but it also leaves room to notice the fragility of someone trying to keep up appearances even as his reality is falling apart. The story does not turn this relationship into a particularly deep drama, but it finds in it a constant source of conflict, humor and unexpected situations. It is hard not to care about Tony’s problems, even though, in many moments, you just want to ask why he insists on making such bad decisions.

One of The Ballad of Gay Tony‘s biggest successes is the number of characters who steal the scene even while standing next to the protagonist. Yusuf Amir is probably the clearest example. Rich, eccentric and completely obsessed with showing off his power, he turns any seemingly simple request into an opportunity for some kind of madness involving vehicles, weapons or valuable property. His presence adds a dose of over-the-top comedy that fits the expansion’s proposal perfectly, especially because the character seems unable to recognize when an idea crosses every limit of common sense. Alongside him, figures like the Russian criminal Ray Bulgarin help keep the story moving, bringing threats, disputes and interests that can rarely be settled with a calm conversation. The return of characters and events tied to the main campaign also rewards anyone who already knows Liberty City, since it lets you see certain situations from another angle and notice how different stories cross. The cast does not exist just to hand missions to the player: it sets the pace of the adventure and gives the city an even stronger personality, so that many of the most memorable scenes depend as much on the people involved as on the action happening around them.

The story follows Luis as he tries to help Tony keep his businesses afloat and deal with the problems caused by people who have money, influence and very little self-control. At the same time, a plot involving stolen diamonds connects events of this expansion to those of Grand Theft Auto IV, helping close some loose ends left by the earlier adventures. That link is interesting for anyone who has followed the saga from the start, although the narrative does not always make the most of the dramatic potential of the material it has. At times, the conflicts seem to exist mainly to justify a new mission full of explosions, chases and shootouts, instead of digging deeper into the motivations of those involved. Luis also ends up a little in the shadow of the more extravagant personalities around him, especially when Tony, Yusuf or Bulgarin enter the scene. That does not stop the campaign from being fun, but it makes clear that Rockstar’s priority is the experience as a whole, not building a crime drama as introspective as the original game. The story works best when it embraces the absurd and lets the characters reveal their contradictions through dialogue, disastrous decisions and situations that quickly spin out of control.

Missões mais variadas e momentos verdadeiramente insanos.
More varied missions and truly insane moments.

The variety of missions is one of the most noticeable improvements over the main campaign and the The Lost and Damned expansion. Traditional shootouts are still here, but now they share space with elaborate chases, aerial confrontations, infiltrations, parachute jumps and sequences that seem designed to turn every chapter into a small action spectacle. At certain moments, Luis has to step into situations that start out relatively simple and end with unlikely escapes, destroyed vehicles and characters trying to flee places they clearly should not be in. Including these activities keeps the campaign from depending only on the formula of reaching a location, eliminating enemies and escaping the scene. It is true that some missions still follow structures familiar to anyone who knows the franchise, but the pace is livelier and the special situations help create a different identity. Rockstar also shows confidence in the player’s ability to follow increasingly absurd events without completely losing control of the experience. This approach keeps the adventure at a pleasant rhythm for a good part of its length, alternating intense combat with sequences that bet on surprise and entertainment.

Combat gets important reinforcements through weapons that widen the ways of facing enemies and match the expansion’s more exaggerated tone. Highlights include the sticky bombs, which let you set traps and detonate explosives at the most convenient moment, plus weapons able to cause considerable damage in fights against large groups. The explosive-ammo shotgun is especially satisfying when the goal is to destroy vehicles or quickly end a chase, while the automatic weapons offer good options for situations where a stealthy approach is no longer possible. The arsenal does not radically change GTA IV’s combat fundamentals, but it adds tools that make fights more varied and fun. There is an important difference between facing a gang with traditional gear and showing up prepared with explosives that can turn a whole street into a scene of destruction. The game uses this sense of power to reinforce its identity, although some missions also expose limitations of the aiming system and of the movement inherited from the original adventure. Still, the novelties are enough to breathe new life into the gunfights and encourage the player to try different ways of solving the problems that come along.

Vehicles play an important role in the expansion, but helicopters get special attention thanks to the number of missions involving air travel and fights in the open sky of Liberty City. Being able to cross the city above the buildings offers a different perspective on a map many players already know, while the aerial chase sequences help widen the scale of events. These missions can be quite thrilling, especially when the script combines height, speed and an escape that seems impossible. However, not everything works with the same precision. Fights in the air can become frustrating because of aiming limitations and the difficulty of hitting moving targets, making some moments feel more complicated than they really should be. When a mission requires hitting enemies while the helicopter is moving, the camera and controls do not always help keep the action fluid. It is one of the areas where the expansion could have received more refinement. Fortunately, these problems do not dominate the whole campaign, and the aerial stretches remain one of the most effective ways of showing how Rockstar managed to raise the scale of some missions without completely abandoning GTA IV’s structure.

Among the most fun novelties are the parachute jump challenges, which use Liberty City’s architecture to create activities where height, precision and courage make all the difference. Across the city there are fifteen specific challenges that encourage the player to jump from high points and try to reach set targets, whether an area on the ground or even a moving vehicle. The idea is simple but works very well because it turns skyscrapers and urban structures into an active part of the experience. Instead of just admiring the buildings from afar, the player starts using them as a launch point for risky maneuvers, trying to control the fall and open the parachute at the right moment. Being able to repeat the challenges to improve your performance also adds longevity, especially for anyone who likes mastering mechanics and reaching better results. It is an addition that combines freedom and skill without requiring each activity to have an elaborate story behind it. More than a simple pastime, the jumps help bring back the feeling that Liberty City is full of possibilities for anyone who decides to temporarily leave the main missions and explore the city in a different way.

The side missions known as Drug Wars give a good excuse to keep using the arsenal once the main campaign starts moving forward. In them, Luis helps old acquaintances steal drug shipments from rival groups, kicking off fights that gradually get more intense and demand better preparation. The structure is not particularly complex, since most of these activities involve fighting enemies, taking hold of certain resources and escaping the area, but the simplicity ends up working in favor of immediate fun. They are missions that let you test the weapons, try different combat strategies and enjoy the gunfights without having to sit through long dialogue sequences. The expansion also offers races, fighting activities and other challenges scattered around the city, creating alternatives for anyone who wants to extend the experience after the credits. Not all of these activities show the same level of creativity, and some may feel repetitive when done several times in a row. Even so, the variety available helps make the package more complete and reinforces the feeling that the main campaign is only one part of the content on offer. For anyone who likes exploring everything a GTA has to offer, there is plenty to do beyond following the story markers.

Despite the good variety of activities, not all of them keep the same level of fun. The dance minigames work as small distractions and offer a change of pace, but they lack the depth to sustain long sessions. The same goes for the tasks related to running the clubs, which have Luis walk around the venue watching the patrons’ behavior for trouble. The idea fits the character’s role in Tony’s business, but the execution can become monotonous, especially when the job boils down to spotting a disturbance and watching it get resolved. Some random situations that come up during these shifts manage to break the routine and send Luis on small unexpected missions, but that does not remove the impression that the mechanic could have been more elaborate. They are activities that help bring the clubs to life, though they are rarely as interesting as the shootouts, the chases or the parachute challenges. The good news is that they are optional and do not hurt the campaign’s pace for anyone who prefers to focus on the story. The problem shows up mainly for those who want to enjoy every available system and expect the same care in every activity.

The progression structure also deserves praise for offering features that make the experience more pleasant. After finishing a mission, the player gets a rating based on criteria such as time, damage taken, performance during fights and the specific objectives of each activity. After completing the campaign, you can revisit missions and try to reach better results, adding a concrete reason to replay favorite sequences. This option fits very well with the variety of objectives and turns some missions into challenges that can be approached in different ways. The multiplayer content, for its part, uses familiar modes such as deathmatches, team contests, races and free roam, with a few novelties related to weapons, vehicles and parachute use. Even so, the online part does not get the same level of innovation found in the campaign. There is a lack of truly new activities that make more ambitious use of the mechanics introduced in this expansion, and the overall structure stays very close to what GTA IV players already know. Even with that limitation, the package offers an expressive amount of content, considering the variety of missions, the side challenges and the chance to revisit the city. For an expansion, it feels like a substantial adventure, not just a small add-on made to prolong the original game’s life.

In Liberty City, wealth does not eliminate problems.

A ambientação noturna é fundamental para estabelecer a personalidade de The Ballad of Gay Tony.

The nighttime setting is fundamental to establishing the personality of The Ballad of Gay Tony. While the original game often explored the decadent, melancholic side of Liberty City, this expansion puts the player in touch with luxurious settings, parties, millionaire businessmen and patrons who seem completely disconnected from the problems found on the streets. Luis works directly with Tony’s nightclubs, including venues that act as symbols of the social position the characters try to keep. You can also visit these places in your free time, take part in activities on the dance floor and try minigames related to drinking champagne. These interactions are not deep enough to turn nightlife into a management or relationship simulator, but they help build the atmosphere the expansion’s universe needs to make sense. The contrast between the sophisticated settings and the violence that often invades this world also produces interesting situations. In Liberty City, wealth does not eliminate problems: it only lets some characters find more expensive, flashy and dangerous ways of dealing with them.

Visually, The Ballad of Gay Tony keeps a good part of Grand Theft Auto IV‘s technical traits, including the detailed depiction of the streets, the movement of the inhabitants and the way the different boroughs help establish the city’s identity. Liberty City is still convincing up close and especially interesting from above, with its buildings, avenues and urban areas forming a setting that seems to keep existing even when the player is not on a mission. However, it is important to admit that time has left marks on the presentation. Textures that show up late, jagged edges and some graphical limitations can stand out, especially compared with more modern productions. The expansion is not a complete visual transformation, but it does not need to be to fulfill its proposal. Its main asset is making use of an environment that was already rich in detail and putting it at the service of different situations. On PC, the experience also depends on your hardware and settings, so it is not right to assume everyone will get exactly the same performance. Overall, the presentation can still convey personality and scale, although some signs of age are inevitable.

The audio work remains one of the experience’s strong points. The vehicle engines, the traffic noise, the chatter between pedestrians and the constant movement of the streets help create the impression that Liberty City is a living place, full of small stories happening at the same time. The radio stations also add to the city’s personality, offering options to accompany your trips and reinforce the mood of each moment. The voice acting deserves special mention, mainly because the dialogue is responsible for a good part of the humor and characterization. Luis, Tony and Yusuf have voices and performances that fit their personalities, making many conversations as fun as the missions themselves. The cutscenes also get room to develop the relationships between the characters, giving the most absurd situations time to happen. Even the content shown on the game’s televisions helps reinforce the series’ trademark satire, with fictional shows that play with pop culture conventions. These are details that do not directly change the mechanics, but they make a difference in building the world and help explain why the city is still so interesting after so many hours of exploration.

THE BALLAD OF GAY TONY · REVIEW DA VERSÃO DE PC
THE BALLAD OF GAY TONY · PC VERSION REVIEW
9.0

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony closes Liberty City’s journey with a very efficient mix of humor, over-the-top action and memorable characters. Luis Lopez may not reach the same dramatic complexity as Niko Bellic, and the story does not always take every chance to deepen its conflicts, but that is made up for by a charismatic supporting cast, more varied missions and a generous amount of optional activities. The sticky bombs, the more powerful weapons, the aerial fights, the parachute jumps and the Drug Wars help renew a formula that could have become too familiar after so many hours in the same setting.

There are clear limitations, mainly in the club management activities, the little evolution of multiplayer and some aerial fights that could have more precise controls. The presentation also shows signs of age, although Liberty City remains a setting full of personality. Even so, the expansion manages to strike an interesting balance between GTA IV’s criminal identity and a more extravagant approach, turning every mission into an opportunity to cause trouble. For those who already know the city, going back to it through Luis and Tony’s eyes is an excellent way to revisit this universe. For those still discovering the saga, the recommendation is to play the main campaign first and then follow the two expansions in release order. The Ballad of Gay Tony is a fun, generous ending full of moments that justify the trip back.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony is one of the franchise’s most fun expansions and a striking farewell to Liberty City. Even without reinventing the formula, it delivers quality content, creative missions and characters who stay in memory long after the credits end.

Varied missions, with spectacular action sequences and memorable situations.

Charismatic supporting cast, especially Tony Prince and Yusuf Amir.

New weapons, parachute jumps and Drug Wars widen the possibilities for fun.

Liberty City keeps a rich setting, backed by excellent audio and voice acting.

O multiplayer oferece poucas novidades realmente significativas.

Luis Lopez ends up in the shadow of some supporting characters.

Certain club activities are repetitive and not very interesting.

Aerial fights can be frustrating because of aiming and control limitations.

Multiplayer offers few truly significant novelties.
