Liberty City continua tendo algo que muitos mundos abertos perderamLiberty City still has something many open worlds have lost

Going back to Grand Theft Auto III so many years later is a curious experience, because the game manages to feel old and surprisingly current at the same time. For this review, we played Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5, a version that adds modernized controls, quality-of-life improvements, higher resolution and a completely reworked presentation on top of the structure of the 2001 classic. There are debatable visual changes and some technical issues that keep the remaster from being perfect, but a few minutes in Liberty City are enough to realize that what matters most about GTA III still works. There is an extremely direct freedom in simply stealing a car, crossing the city, taking a mission and figuring out on your own how to solve the situation. At a time when many open worlds explain practically every step the player should take, GTA III is still confident enough to hand you an objective and let chaos do the rest of the work.

That simplicity is probably one of the reasons the adventure has aged better than its age might suggest. Liberty City isn’t gigantic and doesn’t try to compete with today’s games in the number of activities. In return, almost everything is relatively close and crossing the map rarely feels like a chore. As the hours go by, avenues, tunnels, bridges and shortcuts naturally get etched into your memory. Little by little, the map stops being something you constantly check and starts to live in the player’s head. That relationship with the setting is something some modern open worlds, even dozens of times larger, don’t always manage to create. GTA III works with less space, but uses that space very well.

HistóriaStory

Traído, baleado e deixado para trás. Liberty City vai pagar por isso.Betrayed, shot and left behind. Liberty City is going to pay for it.

Claude barely speaks, Liberty City speaks for him

Claude remains a practically silent protagonist, something that would be quite unusual in the franchise’s later chapters. He works more as a presence guiding the player through the city than as a personality constantly commenting on events. In theory this could leave the story without identity, but the characters around him make up for that absence.

The campaign uses over-the-top figures, criminals, mobsters and characters who always seem to be involved in some questionable scheme. The narrative doesn’t have the depth of Red Dead Redemption 2 or even the later Grand Theft Auto games, but it perfectly fulfills its role of giving you reasons to cross the city and creating new situations.

Interestingly, Claude’s silence also lets the player project a bit more of their own attitude onto what happens. He questions practically nothing. He takes a job, solves the problem and moves on to the next contact. That simplicity matches the campaign’s direct pace.

JogabilidadeGameplay

Total freedom in a 3D city — what changed in the Definitive Edition?

The controls may make the biggest difference of all

The Definitive Edition’s real gain shows up as soon as Claude starts moving. The button layout is much more familiar to anyone who has played the recent Grand Theft Auto games, removing part of the adjustment needed to go back to the old controls. Moving the camera feels more natural, selecting weapons is faster and many actions simply take less effort. It doesn’t turn GTA III into a game made today, but it removes a considerable amount of friction.

The weapon system also benefits from this modernization. Quickly switching equipment through a more intuitive selection greatly improves combat situations. Aiming still carries some traits of an older game and may occasionally pick a different target from the one the player meant to attack, but the overall experience is significantly more pleasant than in the original release. There is an important difference between modernizing a mechanic and rebuilding it entirely, and the Definitive Edition clearly takes the first path.

That decision works because it preserves the original’s personality. Claude still moves like someone who belongs to the GTA III universe, and the fights still have a simplicity that is very typical of the era. A full rebuild could easily change the game too much. Here there is a reasonable balance between updating and preserving, even if some limitations remain visible.

Checkpoints change more than it seems

Of all the new features, checkpoints and autosave may be the ones that improve the campaign the most. It’s easy to forget how some older games made you repeat long trips after a failure. In GTA III, failing a mission could mean going back to the hospital, recovering gear, finding another vehicle and crossing part of the city again before simply trying the objective once more.

Now, retrying is far less painful. It even changes how difficulty is perceived. A hard mission is still hard, but the challenge lies in the mission itself and not in the trip back to it. This is exactly the kind of modernization a remaster should prioritize. The original content stays practically intact, while a layer of inconvenience from another era is removed.

Simple missions can also be excellent

GTA III has a much less elaborate mission structure than what Rockstar itself would create a few years later. Don’t expect huge sequences with dozens of scripted events, constant changes of objective or cinematography comparable to today’s games. Many tasks start in a very simple way. Someone needs to be taken out, something needs to be stolen, a certain character needs to get somewhere or a rival group needs to suffer some kind of loss.

Interestingly, that simplicity ends up creating freedom. The game often explains what needs to happen, but doesn’t necessarily control exactly how the player will get there. Preparing a car in advance, positioning a vehicle, choosing another route or simply improvising after everything goes wrong is part of the experience. GTA III has something almost raw in that sense. There is less scripted spectacle, but more room for unexpected situations to emerge from the world’s own rules.

It’s precisely in those moments that the game still shines. A mission that seemed like five minutes can turn into an absurd chase involving cops, exploding cars and a desperate attempt to reach the destination with practically no health left. Many of the best GTA stories aren’t in the dialogue or the cutscenes. They happen when something that should be simple gets completely out of control.

Driving is still at the heart of the fun

The amount of time spent inside vehicles means driving has to be fun, and fortunately it still is. Cars have different weights and behaviors, even within physics that are obviously simple by today’s standards. Some vehicles feel heavy, others slide easily, and sports models can turn any avenue into an improvised racetrack.

Stealing a car still has that instant feeling that helped define the franchise. You see an interesting vehicle, yank the driver out and seconds later you’re already crossing the city. There are no big preparations or intermediate systems. Everything happens quickly, which fits the game’s pace perfectly.

The wanted system completes this dynamic. The more trouble the player causes, the more intense the police response becomes. It starts as a manageable situation and can quickly escalate into an entire operation trying to stop Claude. Trying to disappear after causing massive chaos is still as fun as many of the main missions.

There is life outside the campaign

Liberty City also offers small side activities that help break the pace. Depending on the vehicle you find, you can work as a taxi driver, paramedic or vigilante, turning ordinary objects in the city into access to other ways to play. They are simple activities, repetitive at times, but they fit GTA III’s philosophy well.

Most interesting of all, the game doesn’t seem desperate to show you everything it has. There are things the player simply finds out of curiosity. That attitude is quite different from today’s open worlds, where practically every activity gets a specific marker, an explanation and an entry in some menu. GTA III lets many discoveries happen naturally, and that adds to the feeling of freedom.

Iluminação nova, modelos refeitos e chuva em Liberty City.New lighting, remade models and rain in Liberty City.

A Definitive Edition modifica consideravelmente a aparência original.

The new look works best when it doesn’t overdo it

The Definitive Edition considerably changes the original look. Textures gained more definition, cars show more noticeable reflections, lights can cast shadows and many elements now appear with a sharpness that was impossible in the version released more than two decades ago. On PS5, this update produces some quite beautiful moments. Certain times of day, especially late afternoon and early evening, turn simple streets into much more interesting scenery thanks to the new lighting system. Headlights, street lamps and facades gain presence, while the higher resolution makes everything much cleaner.

The problem is that not every change has the same quality. Some characters got an overly rounded look and certain faces look strange up close. There is occasionally a visual gap between characters and environments that makes the two seem made for different games. It doesn’t ruin the presentation, but it shows that modernizing an old style is more complicated than simply adding detail. The original models were extremely simple, but they had been made within the limits of a specific art direction. Changing only certain parts of that equation inevitably creates inconsistencies.

The rain also deserves a mention, because it remains one of the remaster’s least elegant effects. In certain situations it draws too much attention to itself and reduces the clarity of what is happening on screen. This is especially noticeable during chases or high-speed driving. Fortunately it isn’t permanent, and a good part of the game happens without the issue. When the weather is clear, Liberty City usually looks much more pleasant.

The radio stations already showed the franchise’s future

Grand Theft Auto III’s audio remains extremely important to the identity of the experience. Getting into a car and immediately hearing a radio station turns an ordinary trip into something much more fun. There is music, of course, but the real difference lies in the hosts, the talk segments and above all the fictional commercials.

Rockstar was already showing an impressive ability to use radio as a world-building tool. Ridiculous ads, absurd commentary and completely over-the-top characters help create a society that exists beyond what you see on the streets. It’s a trait that would be greatly expanded in Vice City, San Andreas and practically every later game from the studio.

The voice acting also still works very well. Even with simple character models and quite limited animations, the voices manage to sell personalities that would be far less interesting on visuals alone. It’s a reminder that technology and personality are not necessarily the same thing.

A city that still knows how to be hostile

Liberty City still has a personality quite different from the one found in the series’ later games. There is no sunny glamour like Vice City, nor the huge geographic variety of San Andreas. Here almost everything looks gray, industrial, dirty and slightly unpleasant. The city doesn’t want to look inviting. There are cramped buildings, narrow streets, industrial zones and neighborhoods that constantly give the feeling that something is wrong. It’s a visually simpler setting, but extremely consistent with Claude’s story and the criminal universe on display.

The progression between regions also still works very well. The map isn’t handed over all at once, so each newly unlocked area represents a real change in the adventure. That structure creates a sense of achievement that would be easy to lose on a map fully open from the first minute. When new parts of Liberty City finally open up, it isn’t just a geographic expansion. New characters, vehicles, missions and possibilities become part of the routine. It’s a very direct design, but still extremely effective.

Jogando no PlayStation 5

Playing on PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 experience makes it clear that this is a much more comfortable version of GTA III than the one remembered by those who played it in the early 2000s. The image is clean, loading is fast and getting back into the action happens almost instantly in many situations. These things seem small on their own, but they make a huge difference over an entire campaign. GTA III is a game where missions can end quickly because of a mistake, a wrecked car or simply because a chase got out of hand. Shortening the time between failing and trying again makes the pace much better.

The remaster had more severe performance problems at launch, and its reputation was heavily marked by that period. Still, looking at the experience as it stands during this review on PS5, the result is much more pleasant than the impression left by the collection’s first months. That doesn’t mean everything is flawless or that small irregularities have completely disappeared, but they no longer define the whole experience. What remains most of the time is the chance to play GTA III with a smoothness and convenience that fit today’s standards much better.

De volta a 2001Back to 2001

A versão originalThe original version

A fundamental piece of video game history

It’s practically impossible to review GTA III today without considering the size of its influence. Many elements that seem completely normal now were extraordinary when the game came out in 2001. Being able to freely cross a three-dimensional city, get into different vehicles, take missions, ignore them entirely and simply explore that space produced a sense of freedom that marked a generation.

GTA III didn’t invent every concept it uses on its own, but it managed to bring them together into an extremely convincing experience. After it, the industry changed. Developers spent years trying to create their own takes on that kind of open world, and Rockstar itself would use the foundation to build ever more ambitious games.

The most impressive part is realizing that, despite all that historical weight, GTA III doesn’t need to survive only as a museum piece. It’s still fun. There is a genuinely enjoyable game behind the cultural importance, and that may be its greatest victory. You don’t need to study it to understand why it mattered. Just drive around Liberty City for a while and the answer starts to show up naturally.

A Definitive Edition that works better today than its reputation suggests

It’s impossible to ignore how troubled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy’s original launch was. The collection created an extremely negative first impression that still follows its name. However, judging the game only by its launch condition would also mean ignoring the experience as it is today.

On PS5, Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition has become a very pleasant way to return to Liberty City. There are still debatable artistic choices, and I don’t think every visual change surpasses what the original did. Some players will keep preferring the atmosphere and style of the classic version, and that’s perfectly understandable.

Even so, better controls, checkpoints, fast loading, a clean image and other improvements make this version especially convenient to simply play. For someone coming to GTA III for the first time, this is a much friendlier way in. For those who know the classic, there’s enough comfort in the new features to justify one more visit.

And more than important, it's still fun to play.

Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 is an odd mix of preservation, modernization and some choices that could have received much more care. It isn’t a perfect rebuild of the classic, and certain visual elements remain inferior to the original’s artistic personality. The rain could be better, some characters still look strange and there are moments when the new presentation seems to forget that technical limitations can also be part of an aesthetic.

Even so, none of that managed to erase what really matters. GTA III is still an extraordinarily fun game. Liberty City remains compact and memorable, driving is still enjoyable, the missions have a freedom that still surprises and the world can turn small decisions into big messes. The structure may be simple, but there is a purity in that simplicity that still works.

The modern improvements also have a real impact. Checkpoints remove part of the frustration, updated controls make the game much more accessible and the PlayStation 5 experience lets you get back into the action quickly. The remaster could be better in several ways, but the game inside it remains one of the most important and influential titles ever made.

Grand Theft Auto III is still much more than a historical curiosity. Its influence is gigantic, but what really holds the experience up today is that driving through Liberty City, improvising during missions and turning a small mess into a huge chase is still extremely fun. The Definitive Edition doesn’t get every change right, but on PlayStation 5 its gameplay and quality-of-life improvements make this an excellent way to experience one of the games that helped redefine the open world.
