Vice City opens with an ambush: Tommy Vercetti, fresh out of prison, is sent by Sonny Forelli to a drug deal that goes completely wrong. With no money and no product, he has to start from scratch in a city that glows in neon and rots underneath.
The story has also aged far better than I expected. Tommy Vercetti arrives in Vice City after years in prison and is supposed to simply take part in a deal for the Forelli family. Naturally, everything goes wrong. Money disappears, drugs disappear, and Tommy is left responsible for finding out who set the whole thing up. From there begins an escalation that turns a criminal sent to solve a problem into someone building his own empire. There is no great effort to make Tommy a morally acceptable figure. He is a criminal, he knows it and he acts like one. That makes the narrative much more direct and fits perfectly with the freedom the game itself offers. Tommy does not need to invent an emotional justification for every absurd thing he does. He simply understands the environment he is in and starts to dominate it.
Ray Liotta still gives the character a presence that makes a huge difference. Tommy has a voice, answers provocations, shows irritation and often seems to be the only halfway rational person in meetings full of completely unhinged criminals. That detail changed the identity of the series a lot back then. After Claude stayed practically silent in GTA III, having a protagonist who talks, threatens, complains and directly interferes in scenes made Vice City feel much closer to a playable crime movie. The cast around him helps a great deal too. Lance Vance, Ken Rosenberg, Ricardo Diaz and several others are remembered even decades later because each one has very distinct behavior, voice and presence. Some of the caricatures are absurd and obviously belong to that more exaggerated phase of Rockstar, but that is exactly why they work.
Vice City isn’t just an 80s backdrop. It’s a rise-and-fall story told like a movie.
The progression is probably one of the things I like most about Vice City. At the beginning, Tommy is working for other people and accepting practically any opportunity that could bring him closer to the truth about the lost deal. Little by little, that changes. He starts making money, meets more important figures, eliminates rivals and finally begins acquiring properties. There is a very clear sense of growth. You are not doing missions just because a new icon appeared on the map. Little by little, Tommy goes from underworld employee to owner of a considerable piece of it. That change also shows visually and in the way certain people start treating him. It is a simple progression compared to modern systems, but it works precisely because it is tied to the story.
Buying properties is still one of the best ideas in the game. Acquiring businesses is not just about raising a number on a screen. Many of these places have their own mission sequences and eventually start producing money. The Vercetti Mansion also ends up becoming a symbol of this transformation. At the start of the campaign, Tommy is practically a visitor in Vice City. A few hours later, you feel that part of the city belongs to him. It is a kind of reward that works much better than simply unlocking better equipment. There is a sense of achievement. And even today, after so many games have created far more complex business management systems, Vice City still gets one basic thing right: making the player feel like they are climbing the criminal hierarchy.

Jogar a Definitive Edition no PlayStation 5 deixa algumas melhorias bastante evidentes.
Playing the Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 makes some improvements quite evident. The control setup is much easier to accept these days, especially for anyone who spent years used to the series’ most recent titles. Weapon access became more practical, the camera is more comfortable, and several actions that in the original had that typical early 2000s feel now require less adaptation. That does not turn Vice City into a modern GTA, because the underlying structure is still the same, but it greatly reduces the feeling of fighting the controls. To me, this is one of the most important improvements in this edition because it does not interfere with the essence of the game and simply makes the experience more pleasant.
Combat still delivers a few reminders of its age. In ordinary shootouts, the system works well enough and you can get through most of the campaign without major problems. When heavier weapons, moving sequences or situations that require hitting several targets quickly come into play, things can get less elegant. There are moments when the precision does not quite follow what you are trying to do. Some missions were also built around controls that made sense within the original limitations and feel strange when placed next to more modern systems. I did not find anything capable of ruining the campaign, but it is one of those areas where it becomes clear that we are playing a modernization and not a full remake.
Some games age and end up as fond memories of a specific era. Vice City is different. It took only a few minutes playing it again on PlayStation 5 for me to realize that this city still works in a very particular way. It is not simply nostalgia. There is so much personality spread across the streets, the beaches, the hotels, the clothes, the radio stations and even the over-the-top way the characters behave. The game practically screams the 80s the entire time, but it never feels like it is doing that just to tick an aesthetic box. Vice City has such a strong identity that you recognize the place before you even look at the map. The Definitive Edition tries to modernize all of this with new lighting, sharper textures and several visual tweaks, and although not every change was for the better, the essence is still there. After spending some time driving around Ocean Beach with a song playing on the radio, it is easy to forget the remaster debates and simply enjoy one of the most charismatic settings Rockstar has ever created.
Driving is still excellent, mainly because Vice City was built around vehicles. Cars have simple and often exaggerated physics, but that matches the pace of the game. You can cross the city quickly, take absurd turns, lose control, crash and keep going as if nothing happened. Motorcycles are still one of the best ways to get around and work especially well on a map full of wide avenues. Some vehicles take a bit more getting used to and there are moments when the physics produce very strange behavior, but that ends up being part of the chaos. Vice City never wanted to be a simulator. What matters is that grabbing a vehicle and crossing the city is still fun, because that is an action the player repeats hundreds of times during the campaign.
Few things in gaming beat driving into the sunset with Flash FM turned all the way up.
The quality of life features are probably the elements that would most make me choose the Definitive Edition for a new playthrough. Being able to restart a mission without repeating the whole trip to the marker is a huge improvement. Anyone who played the old GTAs knows what it was like to fail a mission near the end and realize you would now have to recover weapons, find another vehicle and cross part of the map again. Back then we accepted that as part of the game. Today it is hard to feel nostalgic about it. Autosaves also help a lot and make the campaign more comfortable without changing its structure.
The modernized map and the ability to set destinations are also welcome. It may seem like a small detail, but Vice City has many similar streets and, in the first hours, it is easy to miss an entrance or take the wrong side of the island. After a while the map is practically memorized, but having more current tools during that adjustment period helps a lot. The same goes for the weapon and radio menus. They are simple changes that respect the original game and fix small inconveniences. This is exactly the kind of update I would like to see more often in re-releases of old games.

No PlayStation 5, existem momentos realmente bonitos, principalmente durante o pôr do sol e à noite.
Among the three games in the collection, Vice City fits the new lighting system much better. Strong colors, pastel facades, neon lights and nighttime reflections find plenty of room to show up. On PlayStation 5, there are truly beautiful moments, especially at sunset and at night. Ocean Drive looks especially pleasant when the hotels start turning on their lights. The beach, the palm trees and the cars also get a sharper presentation. After the updates made over the years, the lighting is closer to the personality I expected to find in Vice City. It is important to say this because the current situation is quite different from the impression left by the collection’s original launch.
On the other hand, the character models are still the hardest visual element to accept. Some turned out reasonable, others look overly smooth or rounded, and certain NPCs manage to look completely out of place in their surroundings. The contrast is curious. You can be looking at a street with beautiful lighting, cars reflecting the environment and well-defined textures, and seconds later a character shows up whose face seems to belong to another game. Over time I stopped noticing it so much, mainly because the city’s art direction carries a good part of the presentation, but it never stops being a strange choice. Vice City always had visually simple characters. The problem was never a lack of polygons. They had a style that matched everything around them. The Definitive Edition sometimes loses exactly that coherence.
Performance also deserves an important note. The collection became known for an extremely problematic launch, and that reputation did not come out of nowhere. But the experience I had on PS5 today was not the disaster that dominated conversations when the game hit the market. There are still small glitches, strange behaviors and situations that reveal the remaster’s troubled origins, but for most of the campaign I was able to simply play. That makes an enormous difference. When a technical problem stops constantly interrupting the experience, the qualities of the original game return to the center of attention. Of course, a remaster of this size should have reached the market like this from the start, but evaluating the game today also means acknowledging that it is not exactly in the same state as when it launched.

Maybe it is precisely this personality that keeps Vice City so enjoyable more than two decades after the original release. The map is not huge and certainly does not try to impress with scale. In fact, compared to today’s open worlds, it is relatively small. But that more compact size works very well. After a few hours you start recognizing intersections, shortcuts, avenues and neighborhoods without relying so much on the map. Trips rarely feel endless, and there is almost always something interesting happening between one mission and the next. There is a feeling of truly knowing the city that some modern games, even with enormous maps, never manage to convey. Vice City does not need thousands of icons scattered across the screen to keep the player busy. Sometimes all it takes is grabbing a motorcycle, picking a radio station and heading to the other side of the city.

Algumas missões denunciam bastante a idade do projeto.
It is impossible to talk about Vice City without talking about the music. Few games managed to turn a licensed soundtrack into such an important part of the setting itself. Getting into a car and hearing a familiar song while the city lights pass across the screen is not just a presentation detail. It is part of the experience. The stations have their own identity, the hosts help build that exaggerated universe and the commercials keep working as small doses of humor between missions. Many times I would reach my destination and simply stay a few seconds inside the car to finish listening to what was playing.
The absence of some songs from the older versions is still felt. This is one of those complicated problems because it involves licensing, but in Vice City the impact is greater precisely because of the soundtrack’s cultural importance. People who played for many years associate certain songs with streets, missions and specific moments. When one of them does not show up, you notice. Fortunately, what remains is still excellent and the selection is still far more memorable than the soundtrack of most of today’s open worlds. It is hard to finish a campaign without coming away with at least a few songs stuck in your head again.
For many people, Vice City was the first time a game felt like an 80s movie.
Some missions show the age of the project quite a bit. There are objectives that would probably be built very differently today, AI-controlled characters can make inexplicable decisions and traffic has a special talent for showing up exactly where it should not. In certain situations this is frustrating. In others, it is funny. I had moments when a planned scene was almost destroyed by something completely random happening in the background, and that is a trait that has always been part of the series. The line between a bug and a spontaneous story is very thin in GTA. Not every glitch deserves to be romanticized, but there are situations so absurd that they end up becoming a memory of the campaign.
There is also a simplicity in Vice City that I have come to appreciate more over time. There is no endless list of equipment, dozens of menus or systems trying to compete for your attention. You get a mission, find a vehicle and go do something probably illegal. The game does not take long to get to the point. That directness gives the campaign a very pleasant pace. Even while doing side content, there is constantly the feeling that Tommy is moving in some direction. Some modern open worlds are much bigger and offer far more activities, but they can also turn a two-hour session into a sequence of tasks that seem to lead nowhere. Vice City rarely has that problem.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City The Definitive Edition continua sendo uma situação curiosa. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City The Definitive Edition is still a curious case. As a remaster, there are still decisions I would have made in a completely different way. Some character models do not match the game’s visual identity, certain artistic choices could have respected the original presentation better, and the absence of specific songs will never stop bothering those who know the old soundtrack deeply. The collection will also forever carry the memory of a launch that clearly needed more time. None of this should be ignored just because updates have improved the situation.
But there is another side to the discussion. Playing today on PlayStation 5, I found a Vice City far more enjoyable than that first impression of the Definitive Edition would suggest. The control and quality of life improvements make a difference, the look of the city can be truly beautiful and the performance lets the game finally breathe. And when those issues stop taking up all the attention, what is left is what really matters: Vice City is still fantastic. Tommy Vercetti is still a memorable protagonist, the campaign has great pacing, building your empire is still satisfying and few virtual cities have such a strong personality. The remaster is not perfect. The game inside it, however, is still special.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is still one of the most striking chapters of the franchise. The Definitive Edition had a complicated road and still does not represent a perfect restoration, but its current state on PlayStation 5 lets you enjoy the classic with much more comfort. In the end, the city, the characters, the soundtrack and Tommy Vercetti’s rise still speak louder than the stumbles of the remaster.
